Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective treatment modality for a number of mental health conditions encompassing the spectrum of mood and psychotic disorders.
A team of dedicated psychiatric nurses and doctors provide the service at Mater Dei Hospital essentially supported by the Department of Anaesthesia. ECTs take place twice a week in one of the operating theatres for the safe administration and monitoring of brief anaesthesia.
Patients are referred to this service following an assessment by their own psychiatrist, a review by a second specialist in psychiatry and the necessary pre-ECT physical health checks.
