Renal Unit

The Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital provides dialysis treatment for patients suffering from kidney failure. The unit is on the ground floor behind the outpatients department block. The unit provides the following services;
  • Haemodialysis treatment
  • Peritoneal Dialysis treatment
  • Transplant co- ordination services

Our Aim

Our goal is to leave a positive impact upon the lives of our patients by providing:
  • Care, support and encouragement to patients and relatives
  • An educational background of the illness
  • Further support to kidney donors and donor families
  • Psychologist and Nutritionist services for patients with end stage renal disease

Opening hours

  • Professional nursing services are available, from 7am till 7.45pm. Emergency services are provided after clinical hours.
  • Haemodialysis sessions start at 8.15am and at 2.00pm; each session lasts 4 hours or as prescribed by the caring consultant.  On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, there is also a Twighlight shift starting at 20:00 till midnight.
  • Peritoneal dialysis services, though having an open door policy we prefer that patients attend by appointment.
  • Haemodialysis dialysis appointments may vary according to needs; however any special appointments which need to be arranged for personal occasions or needs must be notified at least 15 days prior the occasion.

Patients are to remain seated at the reception area until they are called for the start their treatment. Accompanying relatives and visitors are welcome to stay in the reception area during treatment hours. A light sandwich together with coffee, tea or water is also offered to patients during their treatment. 
Information related to transplantation and donor cards is availabe every day from this unit.

Transport

An ambulance service is available for our patients. Those who require the service are to phone on +356 25451666 a day before.
Patients who use their own transport may request a parking permit. Parking is within hospital premises in front of the Outpatients department.
A 30 minute free parking is allowed for relatives who pick up and drop off patients.
From the hospital entrances, porters can accompany patients with wheelchairs to and from the unit.
